The Fair Trade Coffee Company is a coffee roasting company committed to full flavored, fresh roasted coffee... so you never have to sacrifice flavor for social awareness!
Our company has over 21 years of experience with coffee roasting. We are able to produce a vastly superior product and are sure you will think so, too. We custom-roast the raw beans that come in from around the world every few days in small 27 pound batches at our Roastery in Garwood, NJ and sell what we roast very quickly. This ensures that the coffee that you get from us will be of the highest quality and taste... every time.
Your friendly neighborhood Fair Trade roastmaster talks about the coffee roasting process.
Colonial Caranavi is grown in the Yunga Jungle, high in the Andes Mountains, in a region known as Caranavi, by a small group of native farmers known as 'Colonials.' There are 41 small farms averaging 3 acres each.
During the 1950’s, a group of wealthy landowners took over the Caranavi region. They confiscated properties from the native people, then enslaved them by forcing the natives to work on the land. In 1991, governmental land reform forced these landowners to relinquish control and return rightful ownership of the small farms back to the families who originally owned them.
Caranavi is located 5900 feet above sea level and is twelve hours from La Paz, Bolivia, in the state of La Paz. The elevation creates outstanding conditions for growing some of the finest coffee beans in all of Latin America. All farming is done in accordance to methods designed to optimize quality without the use of chemical fertilizers. This organic coffee is harvested by hand, and dried on raised patio beds that are consistently tended to, which ensures even drying and an even roast.
The organic farming techniques coupled with the unusual tropical climate combine to produce a medium-bodied coffee with mild acidity. This coffee also presents with a pleasantly spicy, slightly sweet, chocolaty malt flavor after being brewed.
Colonial Caranavi is Organic and Fair Trade Certified, which benefits the farmers and their communities greatly. It's an honor to purchase green beans from a co-op of over 1500 family farmers who grow and harvest in this region.
Experience the unique goodness and perfection found in each brew of Bolivian Colonial Caranavi.
This roasting company was one of the first in the industry when it was started and still is dedicated to
selling exclusively fair trade certified products. It is the visible face of
an interdependent three-way relationship we like to call the Fair Trade Coffee Trinity.
One good way to describe this "Trinity" is to think of it as a well regulated three-way partnership
between a Coffee Roaster (that's us!), a Coffee Importer and many small Coffee-Growing Cooperatives
around the world which ensure a living wage for them and a great cup of coffee for you.
We carry organic and shade grown coffee, organic tea, support cooperatives, socially responsible
shopping and believe strongly in sustainable development. To find out more about the role of Transfair USA, Global Exchange
